How Actor Athletes was born
Hi, I’m Melanie. It was September 2024, a few months after I’d driven the 1,700 miles cross country to Los Angeles from my hometown of Chicago to continue my acting career in a new market. I was working day jobs and auditioning from home, alone, in an unfamiliar city. With my family and three decades of friendships back in the Midwest, I felt incredibly lonely.
I have what I like to call “raging ADHD” AKA, combined types (inattentive AND hyperactive). While I love acting, showing up to rehearse alone at home is the hardest part. Now, as the neurospicy gal that I am, I need to sweat in order to focus and regulate my emotions. I kept asking myself, “Why can I show up to my fitness so easily but not to my acting practice?”
After agonizing in therapy and hours spent journaling it occurred to me: “Why don’t I copy what I do in the gym and apply that to my acting work?” So I took the bones of a 6-week training cycle, and asked myself, “What do I want?”
Easy answer: book my first TV credit. I’d auditioned for the same show 12 times without an offer. But then that familiar dreaded spiral crept in: “How do I make myself show up? How do I know I won’t make an excuse or let life get in the way?”
Look, I will never flake on someone I’ve scheduled a rehearsal with. But if I give myself a nebulous task with no deadline, you better believe it's going to sit on my to-do list for weeks (yikes… years?) to haunt me.
So I do what any procrastinator would do: *Opens Instagram*
In a moment of lonesome desperation, I posted to my story asking if anyone would be interested in an accountability training group. Within minutes, my inbox was flooded with messages from other actors saying “Uh, yes please.”
It was at that moment that I realized: “I wasn’t meant to do this alone. None of us are.”
A few weeks after I finished my first training cycle, my 13th audition for that show came into my inbox.
I booked it.

TEAM PLAYER
Be a reader, get a reader.
Let go of the stress of planning auditions and worrying you’ve asked your one actor friend or partner too many times. With a variety of working actors with flexible schedules, you’re guaranteed to find a reader, even on a whim.
The golden rule - to get a reader, you read for others when they need it. (and truly, there’s so much value in this process for you as an actor too) Bottom line - No guilt. No scorekeeping. Just reciprocity.
TRAIN
6-week Training Cycles: Modeled after weight training cycles, Actor Athletes Training Cycles take the decision making + guess work out of your home rehearsal process.
Deload Week: Just like athletes, in order for growth to happen, you need time to recover. Deload week prompts reduce intensity or volume of training to give your mind and body time to rest and recover from fatigue and stress. No burnout here.
Think functional fitness: this is a sustainable roadmap for career longevity and building a balanced life as an artist.
There’s no such thing as “falling behind” - you can rejoin a cycle at any point in the process.
RECOVERY + PERFORMANCE
Training + performing like an athlete means recovering like one too. Overtraining, underfueling, and chronic stress, or the dreaded “hustle” leads to burnout.
Actor Athletes Recovery Resources are designed by professional practitioners to help you create a sustainable balance to withstand the longevity of an acting career
Resources from professional practitioners including a Licensed Psychologist, Registered Dietitian, Yoga Teacher, Breathwork Practitioner, Personal Trainer, CrossFit Coach & more.
PRs
A PR (personal record, as athletes call it) is a celebration of your wins! At the end of every week, we’ll share our Weekend Wins (and yes, resting counts.)
Celebrate yourself so we can celebrate with you!
